The Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana is known for its beauty and diversity. The Reserve includes almost 20% of the Okavango Delta, thereby combining watery and drier areas, resulting in a wide variety of wildlife and contrasting experiences. In Moremi Game Reserve you can do everything from viewing birdlife in reed-lined lagoons using a mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) to game drives in a 4x4 vehicle across the savannah areas. Leopard can be found in the woody areas, while elephant prefer the north-east where the Reserve borders on the Chobe National Park.

The Moremi Game Reserve is home to a huge variety of species, from wildlife such as lion, leopard, giraffe, hyaena, cheetah, various antelope to almost 500 species of bird. The Reserve has been the site of a project focusing on the conservation of wild dog – you will see some of them wearing collars used for research purposes. According to researchers, the Moremi Game Reserve contains more than 30% of the world’s wild dog population.

The best time for game viewing is from July to October. It is then when the pans dry up and the wildlife migrates to the permanent water areas. Try not to visit the Moremi Game Reserve from then on to early December, because this period can be uncomfortably hot.

The Government of Botswana has been implementing a very successful eco-tourism policy over the past number of years. There are not a lot of lodges inside the Moremi Game Reserve, and also only four camping sites. There are a number of lodges bordering on the Reserve, and their guests visit the area on guided game drives. This policy has prevented the Moremi Game Reserve from being thronged with masses of tourists. You will therefore be able to see Africa as nature intended her to be: pristine and serenely beautiful.

You can fly from Maun via Johannesburg with South African Express and overnight in Umtata Savoy Hotel before you drive to the coast. Near N'taba River Lodge and only 15 km from Port St John's you can stay at the luxurious Okavango Delta.
